Aaaaaaaargh I can't believe it's that time of year | Faves of 2012!

12/31/2012 06:00:00 am
Hola munchkins!
How weird is it that as I sit here typing it is almost 2013?!  The year literally feels like it started yesterday and finished today.  I find that time, or really the perception and passing of time, speeds up as I age!  Aargh I sound like such an old granny!  So, to today's post - the winners of 2012.  I didn't really even know how to approach this - condensing a year into one post seems unfathomable, but let's give it a little try!  Brace yourselves, it's probs gonna be a long one.
Let us begin at the place that I begin every day: skincare.  As we know, I can be quite the fickle one when it comes to skincare - no matter how much I may love a product, and how well it may work for me, I seem to just love picking up more and more to try.  No more I tell you, I must learn to be faithful!  Anyways, I think this year has led to some a-may-zing discoveries in the skincare category.  The Clarisonic is something I've had for a while - I use it religiously until the battery dies, then am so lazy to charge it.  When I then remember to recharge it, I realise I've been an idiot to not use it: it really smooths and softens the skin, and I believe it really does help with tone and condition of the skin in general.  As for cleansers, the standout has to be Soap and Glory Peaches and Clean.  This stuff is just incredible - I wandered away from it for a month or two, then repurchased, and as with the Clarisonic I wondered what the hell I had been doing with my life to stop using it!  Peaches and Clean back, life sorted!  I don't want to laden this post with a million and one things, and as I flit between serums and masks like a hummingbird, I'm not going to choose any particular ones for this post, BUT I shall say highly commended goes to Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair and Superdrug Oil Balancing mask - cheap but effective.  Alpha H Liquid Gold is the one constant in my life, I have used it since November last year, and continue to repurchase it for its ridiculous amount of benefits on all skin types.  Last of all in skincare is a product I've only used for around a month - La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo.  Brilliant product, treats the entire skin for breakouts without drying it out at all.  An absolute must.
Now we have make up!  I love make up for entirely different reasons to why I love skincare.  I love to paint my face.  I find it utterly relaxing, and love the ability to create a variety of looks.  Concealer-wise the love of my life is the Vichy Dermablend Stick.  Covers everything and allows me to skimp a little on foundation.  Talking of foundation, this years brilliant buys come from Estee Lauder and Givenchy.  Estee Lauder Invisible Fluid Make Up and Double Wear foundation are ones that I found myself trying many pots of samples for before deciding I should purchase.  Both at opposite ends of the coverage scale, Invisible fluid provides radiance with medium coverage and an almost silky finish, and Double Wear of course can be sheered out, or provide intense coverage.  Both have an amazing yellow undertone to them that sinks into my skin brilliantly.  Givenchy Eclat Matissime is a very, very new purchase, but one that I purchased after having it applied. Brilliant medium coverage, matte, but not completely matte, oil controlling and very long lasting.  And of course, Nars Sheer Glow is my fall back, love it to death!  In terms of powder, two have been especially amazing - Rimmel Stay Matte, and for times when I want to look more healthy than matte, Kiko Soft Light Powder.  Both are pressed, and both are brilliant for topping up and counteracting shine throughout the day.  Lately, my contour, blush and highlight all come from the exact same palette - the ELF Quad, which I purchased in a blog sale, but don't seem to be able to find anywhere else?!  What on earth am I going to do when it finishes?  Containing a baby doll light pink, a slightly deeper and brighter pink, a yellow-based highlight, and a cool-toned contour, this has EVERYTHING one needs to finish a look off.  Other honourable mentions go to NYX Taupe and The Balm Bahama Mama for contouring, and L'oreal Le Blush in Rose Nude for blush.
Let's have a little look at eyes - favourites this year are my Nars Night Series Mini Palette, HD Brows Palette in Vamp, MAC Greasepaint Stick in Slick Black.  Very recent favourites come from Kiko - their Long Lasting Stick Eyeshadows in 04 and 05, and the  Colour Sphere Eyeshadows, again in 04 and 05.  Kiko is an amazing brand btw, I want to buy SO MUCH from there!  In fact, mascara love of the year also comes from Kiko - the False Lashes Concentrate Volume Top Coat Mascara.  Basically, shove on any old mascara, then use this on top and your lashes with be full and amazing!  Brilliant innovation.
Lips have been a little bit of a revolution for me - I've been trying to branch out and away from my baby pinks and nudes, and have found a couple of amazing things this year.  For an everyday, no-fuss lip, Mac's Angel is generally my lip of choice - easy to apply, creamy, and wears away evenly.  Now, for colour, I have to say that Kate Moss Rimmel Matte collection has really impressed me, and my fave actually happens to be a (shock horror) deep red.  It's actually the red I'm wearing in my blog banner and pic, and is the shade 107.  Deliciously deep, pigmented, and hardly weighs anything on the lip - something I really look for in a shade that I'm not so comfortable with.  Of course, no lips would be complete without a slathering of Burt's Bees Lip Balm - the original is the best.
Hair wise, I don't really use much - my hair takes care of itself.  However, I have really enjoyed using the L'oreal Wild Ombre Kit on my hair recently, and am actually going to repurchase very soon.  Alongside the ombre, my other top picks are the Enrapture Totem Styler, which I've had for around a year, and my battered, but still working Remington Shine Therapy Straighteners which, tbh, I use mostly for curling as opposed to straightening.
Model's Own is now my nail brand of choice, their polishes are incredibly creamy, pigmented and grab onto the nail really well, lasting for ages in conjunction with my Seche Vite top coat.
I thought now we've done the skin and face, we shall move onto a few other bits and pieces.  I treated myself to a pair of Diamonique earrings around my birthday-time - just a simple pair that would stay classic forever: I also decided to purchase a little ring that reminds me that "life is always better with a smile."
And with that thought, I am truly looking forward to 2013.  Really and truly!
Happy new year to all of you for midnight!
Lots and lots of love A.x

Famous | Mariah Shimmer

12/18/2012 06:00:00 am
Hola!
You may not know this - tbh how would you? - but I LOVE Mariah Carey.  When all the little girls at school were obsessed with Take That and Boyzone I quite literally, at the age of 5 thought what's the point.  I loved Kylie and Mariah.  They were my first introduction to proper music, and they are what probably lead me to be the lover of music that I am today.
I digress, but I wanted to give you a little background!  I have been quietly observing the Famous by Sue Moxley brand for sometime - I saw it when they discontinued the old packaging and re branded the brand, and always thought I like the look of the new stuff.  When wondering around Superdrug the other day I saw that most of the brand was on a half price offer - and was instantly attracted by the Shimmer Bricks.  I've been lusting over the Bobbi Brown (the original, as some would say) shimmer brick for ages, but really couldn't bear to part with the thirty odd pounds one would cost (that is reserved for foundations and the odd palette), so I decided to pick up a Famous one.
Playing on the brand name, they have named the Shimmer Bricks names such as Rihanna and Beyonce.  I love me a bit of Beyonce, but the colours were very similar to other make ups I already have, and I have a bit of an issue with Rihanna in general.  Don't get me wrong, she is beautiful and talented, but her life choices leave a lot to be desired!  I saw Mariah, and without even looking at the product I knew this was the one for me!
What this product adds to the skin is a gold/skin-toned glow that looks very believable.  I have used it most days since buying it, either all over the cheeks or just on the top of the cheekbones, and I feel has really countered the cold weather "I look like a ghost" type look!
Definitely a must - especially on the half price offer!

Fit Me! | Maybelline Foundation

12/16/2012 06:00:00 am
Hola!
I have previously mentioned this foundation in a few Face of the Day posts, and in a foundation post that I did a little while ago, but I have now decided to give it a page of its own!  Maybelline Fit Me foundation is one that I quite literally stumbled across in Superdrug one day, and it sang out to me to buy it.  I used it at home a couple of times, and wasn't too convinced on coverage and texture, but more recently I have been loving it.
First of all, the way that you choose the foundation is really helpful - the stands all have a little kind of flow chart that asks you undertone (pink/yellow), depth of skin tone (light, medium, dark), and then suggests a few colours within that category for you to try, and lists the matching concealer and powder as well.  I fall within yellow, medium, and my perfect match was 220, which I am really pleased with.  I purchased the foundation, and the powder, and was on my merry way.  As I said, I was not blown away by this foundation at first - my skin was not in its usual state, and was looking pretty bad, so I don't actually blame the foundation, but myself for trying to use the wrong foundation for purpose.  I did however, start to mix it in with my Double Wear to add some radiance to my skin, as sometimes double wear makes it look dull, and loved the results.  The last 3 weeks my skin is looking pretty good thanks to a change up for winter skincare, and I have been alternating this foundation into my routine.  How does it fare on its own?  It is gorgeous.  The coverage is medium, the texture is light and airy, looks equally good whether you use fingers or brushes, and really adds a partial glow to the skin.  I say a partial glow because it still provides a demi-matte finish, but something about the formula does make the skin seem naturally radiant, with a seamless finish.
The colour is beautiful on me, yellow enough to enhance my natural skin colour, but no so as to make me appear sallow, which can happen to my yellow face (cue dad asking "why is your face yellow?).  The foundation lasts about 5 hours on my oily skin without need for touch ups, but powdering is needed throughout he day, which I think is acceptable for a not completely matte foundation.  I was, however, not a fan of the powder that goes with it - whilst the foundation is a beautiful match for me, the powder left me looking ashy and pinker than I would have anticipated, and it didn't seem to have any oil-control properties.  I am now intrigued to try the concealer - maybe I'll pick it up at some point!
All in all a beautiful foundation, not such a good powder, and a need to try the concealer!

Elf Quad | Blush Bronze Highlight

12/15/2012 06:00:00 am
Hola!
This is my newest blog sale find, and I have got to say, it might actually be one of the most useful things I have bought in a while!
This ELF Quad offers a bronzer, a highlighter, and two pink (fave colour) blushers - one powder matte pink, and one slightly deeper, with shimmer.

This contains everything I need - bar base - to sort out my complexion.  The bronzer is perfect for contouring, leaning slightly cooler than it looks in pan, the highlighter is a champagne with iridescence to it, which is beautiful as a glow-enhancer on top of cheekbones, and the two pinks are just perfect for me to add a very, very pretty flush to my cheeks.
This is just the most perfect kit that I've had in a long time - better than the Nars Blush/Bronze trio that I had - only problem is I've no idea where to purchase another one from?!

Skin Troubleshooter | La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo

12/14/2012 06:00:00 am
Hola!
Today I have for you what has quite literally been a saving grace to me.  The weird winter weather (alliteration gone mad!) coupled with the fact that my body hates winter (apart from snow) means that my skin has been acting both suspiciously and a bit like a mad scientist.  I reached into my skincare arsenal, only to find a load of AHAs and a load of moisture, but no proper BHAs or spot treatments - except the Origins Super Spot Remover, but I find this works better on a targeted spot or two, as opposed to the permanent chin breakout I was encountering.
I had read a fair few reviews that were hailing the La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo as quite literally a hero product, a must-have, and the best thing since sliced bread, so I did a little research and popped out to buy one.  They were basically sold out.  Everywhere.  Anyways, I had an interview for an internship in Wimbledon (which I start soon btw eeeek!), and wondered into that branch of Boots to find it beautifully well-stocked and organised, and the hero product was nestling beautifully in the shelves!  Now La Roche Posay is a brand close to my heart - I love the simplicity of the products, which are all targeted treatments with some pretty intense science going on in the background.  I also oddly harbour love for the almost not quite there, but somewhat clinical, but at the same time, somewhat weird smell that each La Roche Posay skincare has.  It just makes me feel like this stuff is gonna work.  And that is exactly how I felt when I got a whiff of the Duo.  And that is exactly what happened.  It just worked.  Like literally immediately.  I woke up the morning after applying it, and thought I was just seeing good skin on my face because of cloudy sleep eyes, but lo and behold, after a thorough washing of both eyes and face, my skin was looking better than it had in about a month.
This stuff works.  Full stop.  I have now been using it since the 5th of December, so a week as I write this, maybe longer, depending on when I put this up, and my skin has cleared right up!  Not only that - and this maybe my vivid imagination - but the scarring that characteristically invites itself to accompany my breakouts, is significantly less than I have ever seen it.  My skin looks pretty even in tone, relaxed, fresher, and when I look in the mirror I no longer feel annoyed by its annoyingness!
This stuff is so amazing that I'm literally running out tonight to buy it whilst it's still on offer (2 for £15 at Boots), along with the Effaclar K which I have heard good things about.  On a side note, this particular Effaclar Duo was bought in the 2 for £15 deal, when I also purchased the Effaclar Matter, which I will be sharing with you very soon!  But spoiler: it's good stuff!
Hope you liked this comprehensive review of a product which I think could be well suited to most people.

Nars Loose Powder | Haven't We Been Here Before?

12/13/2012 06:00:00 am
Hola!
Basically, I thought I'd written and published this post eons ago, but apparently I haven't!  I suppose that's what can happen with products that are used every day!  So let's start by saying I use this products almost every day, and I happen to think that it is the best Loose Powder I have ever come across, and I've tried quite a few!
The Nars Loose Powder is just a beautiful, quality, well-made product.  The powder is super finely milled, and really works to perfect the look of the face.  The container has within it a ridiculous amount of powder, as in I don't think I'll have to buy a new one for a good couple of years!  The actual design of the pot is a little weird, I find that the sifter inside can often fall out, and that when you close the container, powder forces its way out of the pot, but this doesn't detract from the brilliance of this powder.
So what are my final thoughts on the Nars Loose Powder?  Well, I haven't even looked at another loose powder in the 4 or 5 months that I've had this.  That's got to say something in itself!

Fancy being a doll? | MUA Cream Blush in Bittersweet

12/12/2012 06:00:00 am
Hola!
Here's a little product I picked up the other day - MUA's Cream Blush in Bittersweet.  I am becoming a little bit of a cream blush aficionado these days, I love the flush they give to the complexion, plus their staying power is excellent, and they wear off more naturally than a lot of powder blushers.
I mostly chose this for its almost barbie-like colour, it appears slightly cooler toned in real-life, and I find it to be quite flattering on my warm-toned skin.
As you can see from the above pic, I've had quite a few goes at using it, and unfortunately it now has brush hairs in it.  Oopsie.  Anyways, the formula is actually really, really good, goes on a little creamy, and dries down to a semi-matte, won't-budge finish that lasts all day on the skin.

In the two above pictures, the first is taken without flash and the second with flash - I would say the first is slightly more true to the real colour, although it is not so in focus as the second.  I love this little box of magic, and for £2, I am considering purchasing the more nude colour too!
Hope you enjoyed!

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Lip Stains | Honey and Crush

12/11/2012 06:00:00 am
Hola!
I bought these little beauties a while ago, and just haven't gotten around to doing a write up on them yet, so that brings us to today, and to this write up!  Firstly let me tell you that I bought one, and then another day I bought another.  What can we deduce from this?  Perhaps I like them?  Perhaps indeed.  I picked up Cherish on the hunt for an autumn lip colour - I've been trying to move out of my nude and baby-pink lip comfort zone and trying to wear as many different colours as I can on as many different days.  This Cherish colour had caught my eyes a few million times as I strolled along the aisles of Boots and Superdrug, so on this particular day I just decided what the hey, and went for it.  Cherish is a dark colour, somewhere between a dark pink, red and purple, so I think we'll just call it a berry shade.  On the lips it gives more of a stain than an obvious colour, and is incredibly comfortable in texture, almost balm-like.
So, after decided I liked Crush, I went on to purchase Honey as a more day-to-day, everyday, anytime of the day kind of colour.  And yes, it has proved to be all those.  A nude with a hint of pink, I would think it to be flattering on all skin tones, and with most hair and make up colours.
The balms are housed in a chubby pencil style case, with twist up bottoms, so none of that "fat pencil got squashed in the sharpener" type of thing, which makes them incredibly convenient, as does the fact that they have secure lids, so you can literally chuck them into your bag for use throughout the day.
These pencils wear amazingly well throughout the day, moving from full-colour, to a little bit lived-in, all the way down to just a stain.  The stain at the end of the day can prove a little bit odd in the way that they kind of all seem to fade to a dark red colour, which is a little bit weird, but liveable!
All in all, these are such useful, and convenient products!
Hope you liked,

12/09/2012 06:00:00 am
Hola!
Today, dear munchkins, I have for you a picture.  My basic base for my face!
Correct, conceal and paint!
All of these products are amazing, and I would wholeheartedly recommend them for creating a flawless base.  The advantage of these three products are that they are all full-on in terms of coverage, which gives you the flexibility to sheer them out as much or as little as you want!  Value for your money I reckon!
That's all for today!

Vichy Idealia Cream | Dehydrated Skin Be Gone!

12/08/2012 06:00:00 am
Hola!
Let's have a little look at this product shall we?  Pink, stylish, but unassuming jar.  Weighty.  Pink, unassuming cream.  But you know what?  I think this little gem should be making some assumptions!  What am I talking about?  Well, lo and behold, the Vichy Idealia cream:
I contacted Steph at Vichy because my skin was extremely dehydrated - I'd been through the mill a little bit and was just run down to the max.  She recommended this to me, and quite literally became my guardian angel that day by offering to send this out to me.  Basically, this cream is to - in layman's terms - pep the skin up if you will.  And let me tell you it perked my skin right up after one use.  Not only does it do a brilliant job on the actual superficial surface of the skin, but after every use I feel that my dehydrated skin becomes re-hydrated from within.  Basically it is a pot of pink magic.  A pink potion if you will - and who doesn't love a pink potion?!
As you can see from the picture above, it is a lovely pink - I want to say calm pink? - colour, and is lovely and cooling on the skin.  It applies like a dream, sinking in softly, and a little goes a very long way.  Instantly, skin looks brighter and just generally more alive, and throughout the day or night, skin is lovely and "juicy" i.e. plump!  The hydration effects are lasting, so the product must be doing wonders in the deeper levels of my skin!
I would highly recommend that if you have dehydrated skin, or skin that seems dull, that you pick up a jar of this.  I honestly think it makes a huge difference to the skin, and seeing as I use such a small amount every time, the jar will last me an age.  Plus, it comes in two variations - one for combo skin and one for normal/dry, so everyone can try out this little wonder!
A pretty in depth review for a cream, but I felt it deserved it!
Hope you liked this!

What's In My Face | What's On My Face

12/07/2012 12:30:00 am
Hola!
Today is the start of two brand new blog series - What's On My Face aaaaaaaaaaand What's In My Face.  Basically, its a kind of "currently" series about what make up I'm wearing and what skincare I'm using - hence What's IN My Face and What's ON My Face.  Snazzy names, huh?  Today, seeing as it's the first of both of these posts, I have decided to combine the two - In and On!  So, let's get started!
As we all know, winter has invaded our lives with quite the intention of vengeance - unfortunately this is playing ultimate amounts of havoc with my skin: oily, dehydrated, breaking out - EURGH.  Hero products are:

Now, winter has also meant a little switcheroonie in the old make up routine.  I FINALLY got round to purchasing a full-size version of Estee Lauder's Double Wear, and I am reverting to my alchemic roots by mixing it with Maybelline Fit Me Foundation, which has a lovely, healthy, dewy look to it.  Eyes and Lips are taking on cranberry hues, which I find the ultimate in flattering for wintery skins - they add a warmth, and a subtle pop to a more deadened skin!  Blushers are tending to veer more towards the natural - roses - and berry tones again.  I find the monotone look actually more flattering and interesting than I ever really thought it would be.  That's generally all I've switched up, and then adding lashings and lashings of highlighter on the top!

There you go - What's In My Face and What's On My Face.

Faves | November

12/01/2012 06:00:00 am
Hola!
It's quite literally coming to the end of the year, and winter is well and truly blanketed over the country.  And I am frozen to the bone.  I feel like I'm living in Narnia and the Snow Queen has well and truly frozen me, ready to be shattered!  Anyways, back to the point of this post - November's favourites!  This month has been a little mix of skincare, make up, body care AND also includes haircare for once!
Let's start off with the skincare, because quite frankly, my skin has needed a LOT of care as the cold gets colder and more bitter.  I have been layering it on like nobody's business, and will introduce you to the stars of my routine!  Starting with cleansing, I am actually on a new cleansing "hype" as one might say, aka I'm using something very, very new, but that seems to give me the clearest skin I've had in a while.  The brand in question is Superfacialist by Una Brennan, and so far I have purchased the Neroli Oil and the Neroli Cleanser.  Both are absolutely beautiful, especially the oil.  It is actually a cleansing oil, and is suggested to be used before your full cleanse, but depending on how I feel I use it as first or second cleanse.  It smells just HEAVENLY and glides over the skin so beautifully that one could think that one is having a top of the range facial.  I use it in conjunction with the cleanser, of which you literally need the TINIEST amount, and is beautiful when used with the Clarisonic, but is just as lovely without.  The oil and cleanser together give balanced, soft, radiant skin - I actually love this range so much that I am thinking about picking up the night cream, day cream and serum!
In terms of layering on the skincare I am alternating between a few night of Alpha H Liquid Gold, and a few super intense nights of hydration which include serum, oil and moisturiser (am also hoping to purchase a balm to complete the set!).  Serums of choice are Hydraluron and Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair, oil is the Antipodes Rosehip and Avocado oil, and nighttime moisturiser of choice is the Vichy Idealia (detailed post to come in a little while).  So far this little combo is the most hydrating and the most successful at helping me to have really healthy looking skin when I wake up.
Make up this month starts off with the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation in 2W2 Rattan, which is ultimately perhaps the most perfect foundation I have tried - you can sheer it out depending on what brush is used, or build it up for absolute amounts of flawless.  Concealer has been extremely important in my routine this month - my skin has been pretty clear, but has some scarring from previous breakouts, so I am trying to use more concealer and less foundation.  The concealer I have been using on scarring is the Vichy Dermablend Stick, which is perfection, and the one used for under my eyes is the Sleek Corrector and Concealer Palette, which is beautiful.
In terms of blush, I have discovered the most beautiful colour and formula in the L'oreal Le Blush, in the colour Rose Nude.  It is a perfect nude with a mauvey undertone that looks hugely natural, and gives such a healthy flush to the skin.  I feel like a trip to pick up a few more of these blushes is in order!
Lastly make-up wise is the Rimmel Stay Matte Powder, which I am actually hitting pan on.  Now I am ridiculous in the way I never hit pan on anything, so let's leave it at the fact that I have actually hit pan!  Cheap, brilliant stuff!

Body-wise, eczema has really been plaguing me, sooooooo I picked up these two Boots baby products - I figure if you can use them on babies, you can use them on me!  Together they have really worked to soothe and calm my skin - plus they make me feel cosy and sleepy!

Haircare this month have been a little bit of a revelation.  I was very lucky to receive the Babyliss Big Hair for my birthday, and I have to say oh em gee I'm really loving this little weirdo contraption!  I have also Ombre'd my hair using the L'oreal Wild Ombre, which I love the results of.  Due to the damage I thought would be caused by the ombre, I picked up the L'oreal extraordinary oil, which tbh is pretty extraordinary!  Last in haircare is the L'oreal Elnett Heat Protect Spray in the Volume variety.  This really does what it says on the tin, I love it, and am thinking to pick up the Curls version!
This month's fave TV Shows are Arrested Development, which is just so hilarious, and Elementary, which is a genius show!  Also this month has seen the return of one of my faves - Merlin!
Now that Christmas is approaching, something that I eat a million of for a month has returned - CLEMENTINES!  I can spend hours eating these bad boys, and I get so sad when they disappear from shelves after Christmas!
And that concludes my November faves.  I suppose I'll see you back here in a month where I suppose it'll be time to say Happy New Year!  Eek!
